Day 1, Sunday:

Arrival, settling in to your accomodation, group dinner with all teachers, short documentary.

Day 2, Monday:

Morning class:

Directing, research, interview techniques. Analysis of short portrait film. Discussion of last night’s film.

Afternoon class:

Directing, research, script, call sheet.

Day 3, Tuesday: 

Morning class:

Camera and sound. Try outs in and around school; theme: ‘portrait of the school building and garden’.

Afternoon class:  introduction to editing. Edit try outs with material shot in morning.

Evening: feature documentary

Day 4, Wednesday: 

Morning class:

production, budget, fundraising, online marketing, publicity, pitching your project. Discussion of last night’s film.

Afternoon:

formation of 4 teams and introduction of the 4 people who will be the subjects of the portraits to be filmed over the rest of the course. *a note on teamwork: see below

Field trip to subjects A and B with teams 1 and 2 (students ABCD). Research location, making a prepatory interview, taking stills, script and callsheet notes

Field trip to subjects C and D with teams 3 and 4 (students EFGH).

Day 5 Thursday:

Morning:

teams 1 and 2 to subject A to shoot (A and B direct, C and D camera).

teams 3 and 4 to subject C to shoot (E and F direct, G and H camera).

Afternoon class: preparation for editing with the material of A and B on beamer. Lecture about spotting,

Evening: doc feature film

Day 6 Friday:

Morning class: preparation for editing with the material of E and F on beamer.

Afternoon: A, B, C and D with editor start edit of A’s film

Teams 3 and 4 to subject D to shoot. (G and H direct, E and F camera)

Day 7 Saturday:

Morning class: preparation for editing with the material of G and H on beamer.

Afternoon: teams 3 and 4 with editor start edit of E’s film

Teams 1 and 2 to subject B to shoot. (C and D direct, A and B camera)

Evening: doc feature film

Day 8 Sunday

Teams 3 and 4 have their day off. Transport to beach.

Teams 1 and 2:

Morning class with editor: edit of B’s film with teams 1 and 2

Afternoon class: edit of C’s film with teams 1 and 2

Day 9 Monday

Teams 1 and 2 have their day off

Teams 3 and 4:

Morning with editor: edit of F’s film

Afternoon: with editor, edit of G’s film

Evening: doc feature film

Day 10 Tuesday

 Morning: D’s material on beamer, discussion, edit of D’s film with teams 1 and 2

Teams 3 and 4 record live music with singer / guitarist Margarida da Silva

Afternoon: Edit of H’s film with teams 3 and 4

Day 11 Wednesday

Morning: all teachers, viewing of all films, discussion, identification of a theme for interludes to link all shorts (e.g. trees or animals or village scenes)

Afternoon; final edits A and B

Evening: doc feature film

Day 12 Thursday

Final edits morning C, D, E and afternoon F,G,H

Morning: A and B shoot interludes

Afternoon: A and B plan final evening (publicity, invitations, catering)

Day 13 Friday

Edit by all of long documentary, joining all portraits together.

Preparations for final evening (shopping etc)

Evening: festive premiere

Day 14 Saturday

Transport to train station

*a note on the teams: each team member makes his own short portrait documentary, but because there are 2 team members for every person to be portrayed, each member makes a portrait about a different aspect of that person. For instance, Veronica (who lives near the school) has built her own house out of clay, but she is also a singer. So team 1 member A makes a portrait about Veronica the builder and team 1 member B makes a portrait about Veronica the singer.
